On Tuesday night Ascot United confirmed the departure of free scoring striker Brendan Matthew.
Now Football in Berkshire wouldn’t normally do a Twitter round up, but such has been the outpouring of emotion about Matthew’s departure that we couldn’t not.
It’s certainly not yet in the public domain where Matthew will end up next, but a player scoring 67 goals in 76 games despite a step up from Step 5 to Step 4, must be on the radar of clubs higher up the English Football Pyramid.
Matthew’s now former boss at Ascot, Jamie Tompkins, wrote: “Thank you BM10 for the incredible memories, goals, and dedication to our club. Your impact on and off the pitch will be missed. Wishing you the best in your new chapter. Once a yella, always a yella.”
Lydia Baker wrote: Absolutely gutted B you’re going to be missed by each and everyone of us. You are a true diamond on and off the pitch. Thank you for the most amazing memories and achievements. Wishing all the best for the future.
Yellas secretary Ricky Simons said: Been an absolute pleasure working with you B. Good luck in your next adventure
Tim Rose added: Just said to my middle son Luke that you were moving. He replied “you’re joking two weeks ago he made me the best cheese toastie ever!”
Match reporter Neal Jeffs wrote: “Thank you B for just the most amazing stint at our club. What you gave us we will never forget, and may the next club know they are getting the jewel in their crown. You will always be our diamond striker. Best wishes and see you soon.”
