A look at the weekend’s big talking points, from a record-breaking season for Maidenhead United Women, a debut senior goal for Alfie Anderson at Slough Town and a terrific goal in a big win for Scotland for Leila Lister.

Records tumble for Maidenhead United Women

Club records have tumbled this season for Maidenhead United Women as the Magpies achieved a highest-ever finish in the FA Women’s National League Division One South West.

As well as that highest finish, the other records the team achieved include the most clean sheets in a FAWNL league season (7), the best-ever tally of away victories in the fourth tier of women’s football (4), fewest FAWNL defeats suffered in a season (8 – previous lowest 10), joint best-ever FAWNL points tally (24), most frugal FAWNL defensive season (32 conceded – previous best 37).

At the start of the season, manager Ryan Taylor spoke to our own Abi Ticehurst, but was keeping his cards close to his chest about what he saw as a success for the side but we think he might be quite happy to have busted a few records this season.

Another youngster through at Slough Town

It really was a special moment for Slough Town youngster Alfie Anderson following his first senior goal for the Rebels in the Vanarama National League South on Saturday.

Anderson – one of five players the Rebels signed on National League forms on deadline day – made his debut in the previous fixture against Dorking Wanderers, but that ended in a 5-0 defeat.

Slough fought back on Saturday though and drew 2-2 with Eastbourne Borough with Anderson scoring the opener on 16 minutes as you can see from the video above.

A number of Reading FC Women youngsters are currently away on international duty. Emma Harries is with the England under 23s (albeit has taken a worrying looking knock) while Hannah Poulter has been keeping goal – and was previously featured on these pages – for the under 17s.

Now, we’re delighted to report that Leila Lister has made a mark for Scotland’s under 19s, scoring a brilliant header on 64 minutes during the 7-1 win over Estonia.

Playing with the squad number 9, Lister started and finished the tie and was on the end of her national teams fifth goal with the others scored by Bayley Hutchison, Eva Thomson, Aimee Anderson, London Pollard and Eilidh Adams.

Huge month for Wallingford Town

Wallingford Town have a mammoth 10 Combined Counties League Division One games in April. I feel like that deserves a [TEN].

The promotion-chasing side have already won their first three against AFC Hayes, Enfield Borough and current second-placed side Hilltop.

Lee Matthews side face the backlog in some respects because of their wonderful FA Vase run this season, but they have some tough games coming up including Hilltop again, FC Deportivo Galicia and leaders London Lions on the final day.

Woodcote FC make theirs a double

A lovely double for Woodcote following their Hellenic League Division Two East title. The team won the Oxfordshire FA Intermediate Cup with a 1-0 win over Easington Sports Development. Congratulations!

Burghfield Ladies cause a stir

Slightly niche this, but Burghfield Ladies caused a bit of a stir at the weekend on a local Facebook group, but it’s not what you think.

The blues game against Goring United was called off so the team decided to do a bit of bonding on one of the wonderful villages’ recreation grounds.

A post on the Burghfield and Mortimer Gossip page said: “At about 1.30pm this afternoon I drove passed the little park by the Six Bells /Hatch Gate and saw what I think was some people playing rounders. I LOVE rounders and was wondering if this was just a family/group of friends or if there’s a local rounders/softball team. Does anyone know?”

Berkshire Football Award nominee Yvonne Mattos confirmed that it was in-fact Burghfield Ladies enjoying themselves, but in short if you read the comments – it looks like Burghfield might get a new rounders club!
