Burghfield FC stalwart Yvonne Mattos has been nominated in the category of Volunteer of the Season for the Berkshire Football Awards.
Profiled by Abi Ticehurst back in September 2021, Yvonne is described as: “The club secretary at Burghfield, but the reality is, she’s worn just about every hat at the club you can think of.”
Her involvement in the club came in tragic circumstances following the death of her husband in 1994. She said: “At the time he was running one of the first U6 age groups. My son and his friends were in his team, so in a moment of madness I decided I could run the team – with no idea of football!”
The nomination for the Supporters Trust At Reading (STAR) Volunteer of the Season award we received said: “Yvonne deals with BFC every single day whilst working full time. She does an incredible job within the 6 men’s teams across a Saturday and Sunday and then the various age groups. With the club’s first appearance in the Sunday FA Cup, herself and others delivered exceptional work so the men could carry out these fixtures, sticking with the regulations of the competition which saw the men’s reach the 3rd round of the national cup. She has also basically been at BFC since the start, over 30 years. It’s her pride and joy and gives blood, sweat and tears to the club. Think it was time some public recognition for her efforts was awarded. I could go on….”

What’s the story? Tell us exactly why the person or place should be considered. We hate to get all ‘X Factor journey’ on you but the more detail you can include, the better we can argue for your nominee for the short list.
The sort of details we love to see include things like player awards, goals, clean sheets and any other significant contributions to the footballing community – obviously within the 2023/24 season.
We’ll publish all the nominees for the Berkshire Football Awards as we receive them.
You can view all the 2024 nominees so far here.
Want to know who’s previously won what at the Berkshire Football Awards? There’s a big long page with all the previous winners here.
Nominations will be open until midday on Monday 27th May 2024.
The Long List will be published on Wednesday 29th May and the Short List on Friday 31st May.
Once nomination window has closed, the nominations in each category will be put before a panel of judges for a decision, the top four announced online and the winners at the awards night on Wednesday 19th June.
We will accept nominations for people out of area, the only prerequisite is that the reason for nomination is that it must be because of an affiliation with a club we cover on Football in Berkshire (a full list is at the bottom of this page). We will present certificates and a trophy to the winners.
- You can nominate as many people as you like for each award
- Please try and avoid nominating your own family members.
- Due to difficulties in obtaining permissions under child protection laws we won’t consider any player under the age of 16 for nomination in any of the categories
