Season 2016/17 saw Maidenhead United defy the odds and win the National League South title.
The Magpies have arguably done the same every season since, becoming mainstays of the top tier of English non-league football while operating a part time status in a division of professional and ex-Football League clubs.
So regular have performances against ex League sides become that the feat has its own verb, to be Devonshired, in honour of the clubs long-serving manager Alan Devonshire who’s knack for shocking professional sides is unmatched.
On Bank Holiday Monday however, the clubs status will face its toughest test yet. It is the final day of the season and Maidenhead are in the relegation zone.
A win against already safe Boston United – managed by former Bristol Rovers boss Graham Coughlan – is the only result that will keep Devonshire’s side up.
But the Magpies also need results elsewhere to go their way.
Specifically they need Solihull Moors to beat Dagenham & Redbridge at home, and they need Wealdstone to be beaten or held to a draw at home to FC Halifax Town.
If Maidenhead draw or lose, they will return to the Vanarama National League South.
