Hungerford Town have strengthened their squad with the signing of former Football League striker James Constable as a player/coach.

34-year-old Constable joins the Crusaders from Evo Stik Southern League Premier Division South side Poole Town where he player 27 times and scored 13 goals.

Constable, who has played for Walsall, Oxford United and Shrewsbury Town in the Football League, originally joined the Dolphins for a second spell on loan in December 2018.

At the time Poole chairman Chris Reeves said: “I am absolutely delighted we have secured James’ signing. He is a player of huge stature with a powerful pedigree. He made a big impression during his short stay with us last season both on, and off, the field.”

The striker has significant National League experience having made 161 appearances for Eastleigh prior to joining Poole and in 2007 scored the first competitive goals at the new Wembley Stadium as Kidderminster Harriers went 2-0 up against Stevenage Borough in the FA Trophy Final before suffering a 3-2 comeback defeat.

The move to Bulpit Lane marks a step back up the non league pyramid for the striker and a reunion with manager Ian Herring, a former team mate.

Herring said on twitter: “Beano came through the Cirencester Town academy before signing for Chippenham Town where I played with him for two years. To say I was happy to be in the same team as him is putting mildly.”
