“We are top of the league,” rang out of Lowther Road on Tuesday night as Burnham celebrated a 3-0 win at Wokingham Town.
On this watch, the Blues are good value for their eight-point lead at the top of the Combined Counties League Premier Division North with Youssef Bouimane looking every bit the star man, even before hitting the first goal of his hat-trick on 14 minutes.
Bouimane’s treble took his tally to eight goals in 10 games since his goalscoring debut in January at home to Ardley United.
Joint managers Omz and Mo Bakali have built a solid side that didn’t give much away to a Wokingham team that were missing their own star, captain Sean Moore, who will return at the weekend following suspension.
The elephant in the room though is Windsor & Eton who have seven games in hand following an FA Vase run and frustrating postponements – and have enough points still to play for to comfortably top the table.
Maidenhead Advertiser’s Dan Darlington agrees, writing recently: “Windsor & Eton are the most likely challengers for the title in theory. 10 points back but with six matches in hand, they could move eight points clear of the Blues should they win them all. That seems unlikely, given the hectic schedule and the fatigue the Royalists must be feeling – or will soon be feeling after playing a game every few days.”
Whether Rob Webb’s side do or not though is out of Burnham’s hands, and North Greenford United aside, the Blues run-in should bring maximum points back to the 1878 Stadium.
