In a footballing week where comebacks have been very much in fashion Marlow United came from behind to defeat Mortimer 2-1 in the Berkshire Trophy Centre Senior Cup Final.
Despite a strong start from Marlow United it was Mortimer who took the lead through Matthew Fox when United’s defence was forced into a mistake.
Before the interval both Marlow United and Mortimer struck the crossbar, and it was Mortimer would rue their missed chance when Marlow United took the lead just after half-time through Chris Hurst.
With time running out and with extra-time looming a looping free-kick from Marlow United’s Qwam Thomas somehow found the top corner. Despite a late onslaught from Mortimer the Flying Blues held out so the cup will be heading to Buckinghamshire this year.
The cup win was a likely farewell match for Marlow United who look set to join the Hellenic League system next season. They will probably find themselves in Hellenic League Division One East alongside Wokingham & Emmbrook and Woodley United.
On this display their physicality will stand them in good stead at Step 6 where they will join AFC Aldermaston who are also Thames Valley Premier League graduates.
