It wasn’t to be the fairy tale farewell for the outgoing Ascot United management team of Jeff Lamb, Paul McGrotty and Derek Sweetman as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Royal Wootton Bassett Town in the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier League.

The trio announced their departure in midweek – with the new manager already announced – and it looked like they might go out with a bang when Jack Smillie gave the Yellamen a first half lead.

The dream result wasn’t to be though as the visitors equalised in first half injury time and scored twice in the second half.

Also in the Premier Division, it was a disappointment for Binfield who lost 3-0 to Ardley United despite going in 0-0 at the break.

Moles boss Roger Herridge had new signing Jon Bennett on the bench and gave his new forward a debut in the second half, replacing Matt Jones but it was Ardley who took the points.

Not in our area, but it’s worth telling you about the 12-goal thriller as Highworth Town and Highmoor-IBIS played out a 6-6 draw in Wiltshire while Oxford City Nomads drew 4-4 with Lydney Town and Brimscombe & Thrupp beat Henley Town 6-3. Value for money we think you’ll agree!

In Division 1 East there was a set-back for Sandhurst Town who only managed a point despite taking a 2-0 lead through Will Shaw and Richard Hughes in to the half time break, Wasps though fought back to draw 2-2.

There was disappointment all round at Scours Lane as Woodley United’s derby with AFC Aldermaston was abandoned in the second half due to floodlight failure with the Kestrals winning 2-1 while Wokingham & Emmbrook at home to Didcot Town Reserves didn’t get started due to a waterlogged pitch at Lowther Road.

And in the Thames Valley Premier League it was a dire time for Berks County who lost 7-1 (or 8-1 depending on your source) to second placed Newbury.

In the Suburban Football League Binfield’s trip to Maidenhead United under 21s was postponed but there were no such issues for Bracknell Town under 21s in the Central Division as they beat Eversley & California Reserves 5-0 at Larges Lane courtesy in part to Dan Roberts first half hat trick.

Still plenty of football to come at the weekend with a full programme of women’s football on Sunday afternoon. See all the latest tables, fixtures and results here.
