Thames Valley Premier League Newbury Town had the nation’s attention on Sunday morning as part of a ‘Shirt of the Week’ segment on TalkSport radio.
Hosted by Shebahn Aherne and Tony Cascarino, the Shirt of the Week segment saw Aherne wearing Newbury’s white away shirt, while ex-Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino donned a green and white beany hat.
Reading from a piece shared by the club, Aherne said: “I heard from Nick who works at the club. We’re an ambitious Step 7 football club with our sites set on climbing the football pyramid.”
She shared famous-Newbury footballing names linked to the club including Theo Walcott, Brendan Rodgers and former manager Guy Whittingham, now a summariser for BBC Radio Solent Sport.
Aherne continued: “Supporting a pathway from age 6, working with Newbury Women with the ambition of the club having its own women’s team next season and launched Newbury Town XLFC which supportes men with a BMI of 27 or above.”
XLFC of course is an initiative we know well here at Football in Berkshire as part of the XLFC network which is across several clubs including Maidenhead United and Beaconsfield Town.

Aherne finishes by reading out: “A huge shoutout to all the volunteers, the plan is to be more than just a football club!”
