Reading FC legend Dave Kitson is coming out of retirement to play for Caversham United in the Reading & District Sunday League.
That was a headline for the ages made in the last couple of weeks by the Goats who – as well as running two men’s and one women’s team and having a tremendous Twitter audience the envy of most of us – are big charity fundraisers.
So why is Reading FC’s 106 point legend, scorer of the club’s first-ever Premier League goal and veteran of nearly 150 appearances for the Royals, coming out of retirement?
Kitson’s DKA Academy has been running training sessions for the club and it appears Chief Goat Paul Gutteridge has been using that time wisely, bending the striker’s ear for an appearance.
Now with the first ever Sunday League Day fast approaching, Gutteridge has made his bold move.
Sunday League Day is an affectionate transplant of the popular and much longer-running Non League Day – with the tag line ‘A day to celebrate one of football’s greatest formats’. The first-ever Sunday League Day will be held on 24th March 2024.
Kitson will be in the Goats squad for the game day when the first team host Rose & Thistle and the Reserves play FC Woodley – both games are at Mapledurham Playing Fields from 10:30am.
Caversham have confirmed there will be matchday programmes available alongside food and hot drinks.
Writing on LinkedIn, Kitson said: “It’s fair to say that it has been an interesting few weeks for me! I am coming out of retirement to play for Reading Sunday League side Caversham United – and I have accepted a role as manager and international ambassador for Nauru.”
Sunday League Day is a fundraiser for Prostate Cancer UK. If you’d like to make a donation to recognise the work of Caversham United then you can do so here.
