Ascot United forward Ian Davies has announced his retirement from senior football after over 20 years of striking terror into the hearts of defenders across the country.

Announcing the news on Instagram, the striker said: “Finally the day has come where I announce my retirement from first team football. After 21 years of senior football I’ve had a great crack at it and enjoyed every second. I certainly have no regrets.”

Starting his senior career with Thatcham Town in the Allied Counties Youth League after playing junior football at Wokingham Town, Davies went on to feature in a fearsome and trophy-laden strike partnership with Carl Davies at Binfield as well as Woodley United, Marlow, Bracknell Town and finally Ascot.

Davies played 12 games for Ascot last season and 47 times overall* since joining the Yellamen from Binfield in 2020, scoring 24 goals.

The striker added: “A special thank you to Ascot United…I spent my last three years here and met some amazing people. You welcomed me and my family with open arms and having a photo with my twin boys in an Ascot shirt after our cup final is a photo that will stay on my wall forever.”

On Davies’ retirement, Football in Berkshire chairman Bob Bacon said: “Ian was, and always has been, my favourite player at Binfield. Both for his performances on the pitch, and for the way he conducted himself off the pitch, lovely man, lovely family.”
