Vanarama National League Maidenhead United are set for a huge windfall following former defender Max Kilman’s £40million transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers to West Ham United.

It has been reported previously that Maidenhead had a sell-on clause in the deal that took Kilman to Molineux in 2018 for £40,000, rumoured to be in the region of 20%.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Magpies chairman confirmed the existence of the clause but not the percentage, saying it would: “Profoundly change the course of the club”.

Pleasingly, Griffin added the windfall wouldn’t just be for the men’s first team: “We’re a part-time team competing in the National League, but we have a women’s team, a development squad for girls, an academy and a community scheme.

“The money coming in is not just going to affect the men’s first team, it’s going to affect the women’s team, what we do in our community and the infrastructure.”

Maidenhead United Women are now the senior women’s team in the county following the demotion of Reading FC Women.

On Kilman, Griffin added he knew the player was talented, but perhaps not that he’d eventually help change the course of the club: “When Max was with us, we knew he was a real talent but I’d be lying to say I knew how good his talent was.”

Maidenhead had seen players work their way up the English Football Pyramid before, from Josh Kelly to Danilo Orsi who last season helped Crawley Town to promotion. In terms of transfers he said: “There’s always a negotiation about price and we always put a sell-on clause in. Sometimes it pays off. It’s fair to say this is a big deal.

“It’s an amount that could profoundly change the course of the club.”
