Reading & District Sunday League side Caversham United have finally come good on a promise they made on social media and joined a small group of football clubs to adopt a goat.

In June 2020, the club’s Twitter account tweeted: “If we hit 8,000 followers before 1st of July (2020) Caversham United will adopt a goat.”

That target was duly met in good time, but the silence from the club following the promise on social media, which as we all know IS binding, was deafening.

However, as of Friday 17th July, the Billy Goats officially confirmed the club had adopted a goat, joining German Bundesliga side FC Koln as one of a select group of clubs to have a real life goat as a mascot.

The goat, named Skid, has been adopted at The Bucks Goat Centre, a small open farm in Stoke Mandeville. A club spokesperson said: “At an initial fee of £25.00 for his sponsorship, we have smashed our transfer record in the process of bringing him to the club.

“Skid the Goat has previously appeared as mascot for the prestigious RAF Halton and even featured in a BBC Two drama alongside Richard Gere. No, seriously.

“On a serious note, The Bucks Goat Centre has been closed during lockdown and are relying on donations to keep the animals well and fed. Please contribute to their future, and the keeping of Skid, via the GoFundMe page here. Any help is hugely appreciated.
