The Thames Valley Premier League was formed as the Reading League in 1989 following the merger of two leagues – the Reading & District Football League and the Reading Combination Football League. The competition became the Thames Valley Premier League in 2014. It started with 10 divisions, but now runs six – up from five in 2020.
Promotion from the Thames Valley Premier League at Step 7 of the English Football Pyramid, to Step 6, is complicated. The title winners don’t automatically earn promotion. Instead clubs wishing to go up have to apply around Christmas time for promotion, have a Ground Graded at minimum Grade 7, finish at least fifth in the league and be the highest place club in that top 5 that has applied for promotion. Windsor & Eton easily achieved this in 23/24 despite finishing third, but a year ago (24/25) Maidenhead Town were denied because the club didn’t have a suitable Grade 7 ground in place. They now play at Burnham and Step 6 from 26/27.
