Hungerford Town have signed up two Combined Counties League stars as manager Danny Robinson prepares for life at Step 4.
The Crusaders were relegated at the end of the season and will compete in the Southern League Premier Division South with a refreshed squad that includes Sheldon Wright from Tadley Calleva and Sam Tanner from Reading City.
Robinson confirmed a retained list in the last week that included Matt Berry-Hargreaves, George Smith and Ramarni Medford-Smith as well as a trio of new signings.
Attacking midfielder Wright made 36 appearances for Tadley last season as the Romans made the Combined Counties League Play-Offs. He was the club’s joint top-scorer on 16 goals with Kieran Rodgers, according to Football Web Pages.
Winger Tanner meanwhile joins from CCL North Reading where he played 20 times last season including the Southern Combination Cup Final penalty shootout defeat to Cobham.
The Crusaders have also added midfielder Owen Smith from Isthmian League Binfield where he featured 34 times in the Moles engine room.
“You’ve got yourself a serious player”
A statement from Tadley Calleva on social media acknowledged Sheldon Wright’s contribution to the Roman’s efforts saying: “you’ve got yourself a serious player.”
Announcing the move from the Step 5 club, Tadley posted: “After 121 games, 23 goals and a whole host of assists, we are sad to see Sheldon Wright move on for a new challenge. An asset to any club, on and off the field, we wish Sheldon nothing but the best at Hungerford Town.”
Tadley manager Joe Lawler wrote: “Sorry to see him go but fully deserved. Not just a great player who took a huge step forward last year and we missed massively in the playoffs but also a great person. Good luck mate”
