A night of rain rain rain, goals, goals, goals and controversy unbounded as Ascot Utd beat Burnham 5-0 in the only game of the evening in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division North.

The rain fell throughout the game accompanied by thunder and lightning in the first half but the Ascot 3G pitch stood up to all the elements.

A minutes silence was observed for the Frimley Green youth player tragically killed in a car crash last week.

55 seconds into the game and Ascot were ahead when that man Harry Laflin slotted home after good work by Keaton August. One became two in the 10th minute when Sean McCormack scored this time after a great assist from Taylor Morgan.

Ascot looked like they could add to the score at any time but were dealt a blow just after the 20-minute mark with Dan Bailey being dismissed after an incident with Joe Gritt in the penalty area. With the rain teeming down it looked like it could be a long haul to the finish line at the Racecourse but Jonny Denton settled the nerves just before half time with a superb finish.

It was more of the same after half time with George Lock finishing off a fine move to put the Yellamen 4-0 up before pulling up with a tweak in the cold wet weather

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Dan Malloy was sin-binned and then apparently sent off for comments made to the assistant referee while in sin bin mode though there was confusion all round as he appeared to be called back. The lengthy stoppage continued as Manny Williams on the Burnham coaching staff then had words resulting in him being red-carded and sent to the dressing room

There was still time for McCormack to add to his early goal and make it five, together with goalkeeper Sam Gray getting a bit of a boot late on by an onrushing Burnham player.

Ascot had a few injuries by the end and I’m sure there will be some aching bones this morning. Full credit to the crowd who turned out in such appalling weather added together with fuel worries.
