It was second bottom against second in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One East on Monday night at The Rivermoor, Reading but Woodley United took a valuable point from promotion chasing Abingdon United to extend their unbeaten run to four games.

The pre match activity online centred around Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth’s return to the Kestrels squad, but it was the ever reliable Max Laschok who gave the home side the lead on 15 minutes after Toby Briggs had been brought down.

Ainsworth and Laschok both had chances to double the lead but the game turned on two moments over two minutes.

Abingdon, without a full competitive 90 minutes since the middle of December levelled the scores on 34 minutes and Woodley were reduced to 10-men on 35 minutes when Jamaal Whight was sent off.

Jamie Williams side had to withstand the pressure in the second half as Abingdon looked for a winner, but held firm to take a point that lifts his side up one place above Langley on goal difference.

Post match, Williams tweeted: “That point feels like three! 10 men for 55 minutes against a side second in the league. Unbelievable effort and desire to not lose what they’d worked for. Very proud of all of the players. Lots of people from Woodley United through the gate. What a club! Thanks for your support.”
