There was an FA Cup first for West Berkshire club Mortimer on Sunday as the villagers competed in their first FA Cup tie.

Watford Ladies Development were the visitors to the Alfred Palmer Memorial Recreation Ground in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup First Qualifying Round and while an 8-1 defeat won’t be a result that will live long in the memory for the club, the small historic matter of a first-ever FA Cup goal scored by Louise Delaney might just.

Mortimer’s ladies team are the first within the club to ever compete in the men’s or women’s FA Cup competition which comes with the sides status as a Step 7 club in the Women’s Football Pyramid.

Watford themselves play a division above in the London & South East Women’s Regional Football League Division One South so were always going to be favourites for the tie but Delaney’s first goal of the season – after scoring six in 18 appearances last season – is one for the club’s record books.

Mortimer are back in cup action on Sunday when Newbury Ladies visit in the Berks & Bucks County FA Cup. All the forthcoming fixtures are available as part of our new Fixtures and Results service here.

Details on the Vitality Women’s FA Cup 2022/23 round dates and prize fund are here, a list of this year’s entries from Berkshire is here.
