The following statement was released on Monday 25th May regarding the future of the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship 2019/20 season – “The FA Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship Board has today confirmed the decision to end the 2019/20 season for the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and the FA Women’s Championship, with immediate effect.
“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the FA Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship Board has been in regular consultation with clubs and key stakeholders from across both leagues to identify the most suitable and appropriate way to conclude the 2019-20 season, and to give clubs and players the clarity and support they need at this time.
“Following overwhelming feedback from the clubs, the decision to bring an end to the 2019-20 season was made in the best interest of the women’s game.
The FA Board are yet to be confirm whether the season will be voided or determined using a points per game formula. Champions League places remain in debate, but it is understood they will be based on sporting merit, whilst promotion and relegation also remain in limbo.

Reading manager Kelly Chambers posted her reaction to the news via her Twitter account having said the following “Not the way we wanted to end the season but definitely the safest way to protect all. The players and staff have been fantastic through this uncertain time and I couldn’t be more proud of them. I would also like to thank all fans for travelling up and down the country with us, you have been unbelievable! It’s now time to reflect and prepare for next season. Stay safe.” Reading currently sit 5th in the table on 21 points with a league form of won six, drawn three and lost five.
At present it doesn’t appear that any players are out of contract due to the current situation with both Brooke Chaplen and Fara Williams being the most recent squad members to have agreed to one year extensions at the beginning of the year which will see them up for contention in June 2021.
Manchester City sit top of the table on 40 points with just 4 points separating 1st, 2nd and 3rd with Reading local, Fran Kirby’s Chelsea on 39 points and Arsenal on 36. Whilst Liverpool sit bottom of the table with just 6 points and in relegation battle with Bristol City and Birmingham City.
