I’ve retold the story many a time but my paths crossed with Football in Berkshire first in November of 2019 and I wrote my first article around about February of 2020.
And as I sit here on the train home from an evening celebrating our tenth birthday, it seems only right to take a moment to reflect.
2019 had been an incredibly tricky year for me personally (I won’t bore anyone with the details) but I was finding some joy again in the shape of a new love…namely non-league football. My passion for women’s football had been steadfast for a while at this point but I’d never had an outlet to express that. A series of sassy tweets and a few DM exchanges and before long I was regularly writing about the women’s game in the county.
It’s been a real pleasure to be part of this team and it’s afforded me so many opportunities I could never have dreamt of.
I’ve sat in media boxes and watched WSL sides play, I’ve commentated on a number of games, I’ve hosted and guested on numerous podcasts, I’ve interviewed brilliant people, I’ve travelled all over the country and I’ve worked at a local club which meant I was able to lift the FA Vase trophy and most importantly, I’ve made some genuine friends.
I can’t write this post without talking about the absolute legend that is TC. Him taking a chance on me all those years ago has sent my life on a trajectory that I could never have imagined and many opportunities have come my way because of his faith in me. We talk pretty much every day and I’m sure we wind each other up on more than one occasion but I wouldn’t change him for the world. His passion for telling people’s stories is unmatched and an inspiration. He’s one of life’s good eggs and we make a pretty good duo if I do say so myself. So thank you Tom, for everything.
And one last word, I just missed the chance to meet Duds and it’s something I’ll always feel a bit sad about, but I hope wherever he is out there, he’s proud of what we do.
He’s to Football in Berkshire turning 10, what a decade it’s been.
