Combined Counties League Division One Berks County have posted a couple of statement wins in a bid to reel in runaway leaders Amersham Town.

The Swords were held to a 1-1 draw at Eversley & California on the 30th January but have since posted confidence-boosting wins against Amersham and nearest challengers Yateley United.

On Saturday, Sid Gbla fired County to victory against Amersham with two goals, Shaun Wylie got the other in a 3-1 win with The Magpies previously only beaten twice in the league this season. The game didn’t come without casualties – 26 goal Luke Hayden looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines while Matthew Laverty was sent off.

On Tuesday night third placed Yateley were the visitors to the Racecourse Ground with Gbla again on target twice in a 4-2 win. Returning Nick Thumwood and Ellis Day were also on targt while Christopher Boutros and Myles Whyte replied for Yateley.

Winning the title and overhauling free-scoring Amersham remains a long shot for the Swords – they are ten points behind and exactly half the goal difference – but with 15 games to go don’t rule it out.

Elsewhere in Division One the remaining play-off places see British Airways, Langley, Eversley and Molesey all within a reasonable shout of making the end-of-season knockout.

In the division, the winners are automatically promoted while the teams in second to fifth go into the play-offs.
