There were definitely some raised eyebrows on the all important barometer of our lives that is social media when Windsor & Eton announced a challenge to see 1,000 through the door for their Stag Meadow bow on Saturday.
But the 2023 established Thames Valley Premier League side achieved their goal with 1,022 the official figure announced for the 0-0 draw with Burghfield in Windsor Great Park.
Football in Berkshire did due diligence and contacted Thames Valley Premier League President Mark Rozzier who confirmed Windsor’s attendance was in fact a league record.
He said: “As far as we know, and in all my years involved in the league in it’s various guises there’s never been a larger attendance. There is nothing written down in paper work most of these games in our competition are played without means to count attendance.
“We have the ability to count attendance at our semi and cup finals at The Rivermoor and when they’re played at the Madesjki Stadium, so I’m more than happy to confirm Windsor’s attendance on Saturday against Burghfield as a league record – it’ll take some beating!”
