Maidenhead United will be without centre back Joseph Ellul next season after the defender tweeted he was ‘a free agent’.

Ellul joined the Vanarama National League Magpies in the summer of 2019 after a three month spell in New Zealand with Tasman United having previously played against Maidenhead for Braintree Town.

At the time, Ellul was excited about joining the club in an interview with Shay Bottomley: “I spoke to a friend that played for Maidenhead a few years ago, and he put me in touch with the manager [Alan Devonshire]. Straight away, I knew it was the club for me.”

It would certainly appear though that Ellul’s time at York Road is over after he posted a tweet on Thursday: “First time in a long time I can actually say I’m a free agent.”

Ellul made 38 appearances for the Magpies during the 2019/20 season, scoring three goals, one being a memorable strike in a 4-3 win away to Dover Athletic – a game that saw him pick up a second successive red card having been sent off the previous fixtures against Boreham Wood.

Maidenhead, who celebrate their 150th anniversary next season, will play again at the top level of the Non League Pyramid despite finishing 21st in the curtailed campaign.
