Emma Harries announced on her Twitter that she has ruptured her PCL whilst on international duty for the England U23s and will therefore be out for the rest of the season for Reading Women. She was carried off the pitch during their game against the Netherlands U23s side.

The 20-year-old striker made the step up to senior football after signing her first professional contract for the Royals in the 2020/21 season. She has since proven her worth in the FA Women’s Super League with three goals and two assists this season alone. The Bracknell born girl’s performance has clearly impressed England U23’s manager, Mo Marley, who called her up to international duties regularly throughout the season so an injury at this stage in her career is a real blow.

Harries is also a Berkshire Football Awards nominee this year.

What is a PCL?

According to Ortho Online, ‘The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is located inside the knee, just behind the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). It is one of several ligaments that connect the femur (thighbone) to the tibia (shinbone). The posterior cruciate ligament keeps the tibia from moving backward with relation to the thigh bone.’

A rupture of the PCL is considered a grade three injury which means the ligament is completely torn and the knee is unstable.

The final stretch

Reading have three games left of the season. They play host to West Ham on Sunday 24th of April at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, followed by a visit to Leicester City before they round the season off with a home game against Manchester City.

Everyone at Football in Berkshire wishes Emma a speedy recovery and hopes to see her back on the pitch for Reading once again.
