Permanent move for Sheffield Wednesday’s ex-Binfield hero

Stopper was a key part of Binfield's 'Great Escape'

Goalkeeper Killian Barrett has made the permanent move from Championship side Sheffield Wednesday to League Two Barrow AFC.

Barrett has spent time on loan at Boston United in the National League this season and now has an 18-month contract with Barrow. He has also spent time on loan at Solihull Moors and Rochdale while also earning a call up to the Republic of Ireland under 21 side last year.

Speaking to Barrow’s official website, Barrett said: “I was buzzing when I got the call about the interest and I was like lets go for it and see what the next chapter of my life will be.

“I only got told about the move a few days ago and after speaking with people at Sheffield Wednesday, I felt it was going to be a good move for my career.

“I also felt like it was going to progress me the most, so now it is time to get my head down and get to work.”

In July 2024, Barrett arguable made the save that ensured Binfield completed ‘the great escape’ against Uxbridge. Reporting his move to Wednesday at the time, Football in Berkshire wrote: “With the Moles losing 1-0 to Uxbridge in a game they needed to draw or win to guarantee safety on the final day of the season, Barrett stared down the oncoming centre forward and produced a dive at feet with zero margin for error.

“As the Moles faithful took a deep breath, Barrett emerged with the ball safely in both hands. Exhale.

“That moment was a precursor to the Moles equaliser with the last kick of the game, but it was the key moment in the tie that kept Binfield up – there would have been no coming back from 2-0 down.

“Barrett’s meteoric rise to the Championship began as a seven year old playing for Ballisodare United in his native Ireland, where he was scouted by Mayo SL Airtricity and went on to win the All Ireland Futsal title with his school.

Binfield wasn’t Barrett’s only stop in the UK, on moving to England as a 17 year old he signed for Hartley Wintney. Last season he took an opportunity for first team football at Combined Counties League Woodley United before being snapped up by new Binfield boss Ross Weatherstone for the Moles great escape.
