Slough Town hit four without reply on Saturday in the Vanarama National League South as play-off chasing Worthing knelt before the genius of Slavi Spasov.
The Rebels in yellow are unlikely to make the play-offs themselves this season, but Scott Davies’ side are certainly going to have their say, and made the Rebels in red suffer at Arbour Park.
John Gilbert and Davies (free-kick, naturally) were the early architects of a win that saw Slough disrupt a play-off charge as they had a week earlier with the 1-0 win over Maidstone United.
Bulgarian forward Spasov then made it 14 goals for the season with two goals, one in the 30th minute and the other in the 73rd to put the game beyond a Worthing side that hadn’t tasted defeat in the Vanarama National League South since November.
Spasov aside, there were performances across the pitch, not least David Ogbonna who won the free-kick that player/manager Davies converted while he supplied the crosses for both of Spasov’s goals and could have one of his own that went agonisingly wide.
What odds another play-off upset for the Rebels when they travel to the South West to face Truro City?
Maidenhead United relishing clean sheets
Defensive resilience could not have come at a better time for Maidenhead United after posting four points from two games during a tricky run of fixtures and Vanarama National League survival at stake.
The Magpies beat Southend United last week with a classic ‘Devonshiring’ at home and followed that up with a 0-0 draw at Hartlepool United.
The trickier tests of Oldham Athletic away on Tuesday night, then Yeovil Town at home on Saturday are to come but Alan Devonshire’s side are a point above the drop zone in a division that can change rapidly – games in hand mean second-bottom Boston United could string a couple of results together and find themselves ‘safe’.
Mid-table is not out of reach for the Magpies but work remains to preserve their place in non-leagues top flight.
