Hungerford Town flying-high as Maidenhead United issue Devonshiring

Hungerford Town moved up to eighth in the Southern League Premier Division South after a 3-0 win at relegation-threatened Tiverton Town.

It’s probably fair to say four games ago Crusaders fans and boss Danny Robinson may have been looking nervously over their shoulders as Hungerford slipped to 19th of 22 in the division after a 1-1 draw at Walton & Hersham.

A reshuffling of the squad though and a 4-0 win over Berkshire neighbours Bracknell Town has spurred Robinson’s side onto a four game winning run with Tiverton the latest side to succumb to the Crusade.

On Saturday afternoon it was Rhys Tyler who opened the scoring on the half hour and Jose Marquez made it 2-0 in first half injury time.

Former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe got more minutes in his legs as a second half substitute for Kyle Tooze but it was Marquez who made sure of the three points with an 85th minute finish.

Division rivals Bracknell Town had reinforcements of their own with the returning Jordan Esprit and Jack Matton in the starting eleven, but it proved another difficult afternoon with a 2-0 defeat to Taunton Town.

In the Vanarama National League South, Slough Town’s difficult run of three straight 3-1 defeats was ended as they surprised play-off chasing Maidenhead Maidstone United with a 1-0 win courtesy of new signing Edon Pruti with a header from a corner.

The division above saw Maidenhead United administering ‘a Devonshiring‘ with a 1-0 win over Southend United at York Road courtesy of defender Will de Havilland, heading home a free-kick after 56 minutes.
