Saturday afternoon in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division North. Ascot United on a run of six straight wins, Windsor without a win in five and 17 goals against.
There could be only one winner when the two sides met for the second time in a month right?
We were all wrong as Mark Cooper’s side set fire to the form book with a 3-1 win at home to the Yellamen who’d been quietly making their way up the league table.
Speaking to Football in Berkshire on Friday, Cooper suggested a couple of members of a big injury list were on their way back into contention for the Royalists who led 1-0 in the game after 10 minutes through Lindell Stewart, scoring his ninth of the season.
Danny Horscroft doubled the lead on 36 minutes from a Charlie Losasso corner and Windsor took that 2-0 lead in to the break.
Undoubtedly, Ascot manager Jamie Tompkins would have had a few things to say to his side at the break, but Eric Sowonola put the game to bed on the hour to make it 3-0.
Minutes later, the Yellamen did rally, new signing Adam Everiss – from Basingstoke Town – pulled one back but the visitors were unable to add to their tally.
Tadley Calleva 6-1 St Panteleimon
Tadley Calleva sprung a surprise of their own, beating early pacesetters St Panteleimon 6-1 at Barlows Park to lift themselves off the foot of the table.
The visitors, more accustomed to scoring lots of goals than conceding them – having scored five goals in a game three times this season already, including a recent 5-0 win against Windsor – were clearly stunned as braces from Connor Thorne and Ben Wright, an own goal and another for Lucas Burt condemned the Enfield based side to a second defeat of the season.
Reading City boss Simon Johnson said ‘looked like we were back to our old selves’ as the Cityzens drew 1-1 with Spelthorne Sports at the Rivermoor.
It’s been a tough few weeks results wise for Johnson’s side who were ahead in the first half through Tyler D’Cruz only for the visitors to level up in the second half.
Virginia Water have had a decent couple of results in recent weeks but a trip to Egham Town proved a step to far with a 2-0 defeat while Holyport were beaten 2-1 at Wembley despite a Dan Wilson goal and Wokingham & Emmbrook earned a very credible point in a 0-0 draw at home to high-flying Hanworth Villa.
