Hungerford Town were hoping to put Saturday’s defeat against Dartford behind them when they welcomed Oxford City to Bulpit Lane on Tuesday night.
However, they were unable to return to winning ways as they fell to back-to-back defeats, losing 4-1 despite making two switches from the starting 11 that faced the Darts at the weekend.
Matt Partridge and Mike Jones came into the side, but it didn’t take long before the Crusaders fell behind after James Roberts found the bottom corner with only nine minutes on the clock.
Hungerford did draw level soon after though as Partridge bundled home an equaliser from close range following a Ryan Seager free-kick.
That proved to be as good as it got on the goal scoring front for the Crusaders and they were on the receiving end of the score-line again shortly before half-time when Roberts netted his brace.
Just before the hour mark, Reece Fleet was brought down in the box and after Josh Ashby stepped up to take the resulting penalty, the number four made no mistake and bagged Oxford’s third.
The visitors weren’t done there though as Elliot Benyon gave the visitors a three-goal cushion with five minutes remaining.
The result meant that the Crusaders dropped down to fifth, six points off top spot.
Attentions turn to Saturday
Hungerford now turn their focus to Saturday as they host their third consecutive home match, welcoming 16th place Dulwich Hamlet to Berkshire.
Elsewhere in the National League South, Slough Town travel to Chippenham Town as they look set to return to action following two weeks without football.
Alongside their National League Berkshire counterparts, Maidenhead United will also be looking to return to winning ways as they travel to Eastleigh on Saturday.
The Magpies’ impressive unbeaten run hit the rocks on Saturday and after Tuesday’s game fell foul of Covid-19 issues, they now turn their attentions to a tough test at the Silverlake Stadium.
