Wrexham AFC may be the club currently sprinkled with a little bit of Hollywood magic, but it was Maidenhead United who didn’t read the script when they picked up a 1-0 win in Wales on Monday night, live on BT Sport.

The Magpies turned a bad week in to a good one when Josh Coley fired the only goal of the game after 33 minutes to give Alan Devonshire’s side a first win of the Vanarama National League season following three straight defeats.

It was just the tonic for Maidenhead fans who’s anticipation for the season must have been tempered somewhat by defeats to Sutton United, Kings Lynn Town and Hartlepool United in their three opening fixtures.

The goal came when Coley – a summer signing from Norwich City – got on the end of Shaun Donnellan’s cross to take the lead at the Racecourse Ground after Donnellan had already seen an earlier effort saved.

Wrexham – who would have gone joint top with a win – did have second-half chances but a combination of missing the target, Magpies ‘keeper Taye Ashby-Hammond and a goal ruled out for offside all contributed to the three points heading to Berkshire.
