On Tuesday night Sandhurst Town made the trip to Surrey to face Farnham Town looking to make it two wins from two after registering their first points of the season on Saturday when they defeated Dorking Wanderers Reserves.
Farnham are one of the sides setting the early season pace, they had 12 points from 5 games and sat 4th in the table, off the top on goal difference only.
The first half was a competitive affair for Ian Selley’s men where both sides showed attacking intent, but it was the home team who carved out the best chances with former Fizzer Charlie Oakley looking dangerous up front.
Sandhurst went close to opening the scoring on 35 minutes when a free-kick was delivered into the box and Liam Hind came within inches of making contact in front of goal.
The Fizzers were left to rue that missed opportunity as a couple of minutes later a smart low ball was delivered into the box and Oakley was on hand to give his current side the lead against former club.
Sandhurst went close to equalising before half time when a nice move left Paris Ruiz in space on the edge of the box, but the midfielder’s effort went just the wrong side of the upright.
After the break, the game was more even and chances were less forthcoming, but two moments of quality six minutes apart eventually took the game away from the Fizzers. First, in the 69th minute Farnham full-back Tom Smith did well to get past a couple of defenders on the left and delivered a low cross that found Oakley three yards out, and the striker was able to stab home his second.
Then with 15 minutes to go a cross from Max Meaton found Oakley who smashed the ball in to complete his hat-trick and give his side an unassailable lead.
Farnham remained solid and closed out the game consigning Sandhurst to their fifth defeat in six league games. Their hosts on the other hand finished the night at the top of the table.
There were a few positives for Ian Selley and Ryan Northmore, especially in the first half and the Fizzers will have the chance to get back to winning ways when they travel to face Bedfont & Feltham on Saturday.
