Having taken four points from their opening two Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division fixtures as well as an FA Cup win, Ascot United would have been confident going in to their away day at Holmer Green.
The Yellamen’s unbeaten run came to an abrupt end though in Buckinghamshire as Hellenic new boys Holmer made it two wins from three this season.
A late breakaway goal for Holmer by Jon Cox – slotting past Lee Allen (pictured) after good work by Dan Hunt ended Ascot’s run and the report on the United website suggests the visitors were guilty of a series of missed chances.
Virginia Water are still looking for their first win of the season since promotion from Division 1 East. The Waters were beaten 2-0 at home by Brackley Town Saints while fellow promoted side Ardley United remain rooted to the bottom after a 3-1 home defeat by Wantage Town.
Across the division, Bishop’s Cleeve are doing their early season title challenge claims no harm following a resounding 5-1 win at home to Royal Wootton Bassett Town.
At the bottom, Tuffley Rovers remain point-less after a late 2-1 defeat at home to Longlevens while in the middle of the table Lydney Town and Brimscombe & Thrupp shared a 2-2 draw.
In the FA Cup, Reading City went out to Chipping Sodbury in a replay while Sandhurst Town and Windsor play their respective replay’s on Wednesday night.
