Woodley United got their Reading Senior Cup campaign off to a flying start with a 2-0 win in extra time over Hellenic League Division 1 East promotion chasers Virginia Water on Tuesday night.

The sides couldn’t be separated at full time, both teams played good football without troubling the goalkeepers – the home sides biggest threat coming from a long throw.

The first half of extra time saw Woodley ‘keeper Alex Reed block a shot with his feet when Steve Williams was through one on one but with the clock just crossing the 100 minute mark Toby Briggs rounded home ‘keeper Matt Jones and saw his angled shot rebound off the far post to the feet of Danny Horscroft to finally break the deadlock.

It was all wrapped up in the second half of extra time with no need for further Reed penalty heroics, Marvin Hinds broke down left, found Briggs who in turn found Owen Davies to fire low past Jones for his first goal for the club.

The one blot on the night saw Virginia Water’s Finn Evered dismissed late on in extra time.
