Berks County manager Ellis Woods tweeted “It’s only ever the 3 points that matter.” after his side’s impressive 6-0 victory over Holmer Green.
We understand the sentiment from a football manager, however we can’t help but not mention other events that unfolded at the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday evening.
Remarkably, the Swords‘ six-nil win was earned with new signing Nick Thumwood scoring all six goals for the home team. It’s an incredible feat that we don’t think will be equalled this season.
He is now top of the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Division One scoring charts with eight goals, just ahead of Makael Scott of Hillingdon Borough with seven goals in his four games. Thumwood has scored in all three league fixtures so far this season.
There’s clearly still a long way to go, but County will be happy with a solid home victory over Holmer Green after a disappointing loss to British Airways in their opening fixture. They now have two wins from three and sit just outside of the playoffs.
Berks County have no game on the 19th August, before hosting Woodley United on the 22nd August. They then make the long trip down the M4 to face Toolstation Western League club Portishead Town in the FA Vase.
Elsewhere Yateley United’s long winning run in league football came to an end on Tuesday night. A streak lasting 465 days and taking in promotion and the Thames Valley Premier League title was halted by a 2-0 home win for Bedfont in the Combined Counties League Division One.
