Our women’s football correspondent, Abi Ticehurst, caught up with players from across the county after the opening weekend of the 2021/22 season. Here’s what Lauren Broadhurst, Ellen Surtees, Sue Edwards and Sarah Thompson had to say as part of our new Full Time Thoughts feature.

Slough Town FC Ladies 3-2 Abingdon United FC Development Women

Slough Town compete in Division 2 of the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League, having been runners up and successfully promoted from the Division 3 East in 2020/21.

I was very happy to play my first game for Slough yesterday, came away with two goals, well deserved 3 points and player of the match . We scored two first half goals that seemed to settle us even in the hot conditions and we played some very nice football. Third goal came after half time that looked like the game was in our hands but credit to Abingdon to pull two goals back late on but we dug deep and got the job done. Overall a very good team performance and more to build on for next weekend.

Burghfield Ladies 2-4 Goring United Ladies Reserves

Burghfield Ladies compete in the Development Division of the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League, they are a brand new women’s team for the 2021/22 season.

It wasn’t the start we wanted, but for the first ever league game we pitted ourselves well against much more experienced opposition. Emma Dickens put in an excellent shift for the ‘player of the match’ award and on another day we could have easily got the draw. The important thing now is to take away the experience of our first game and build on the positives.

Woodley United compete in the Premier Division of the Southern Region Women’s Football League

Sunday was a tough opener for us. We always know that Winchester are going to give us a good game and that they did. We’ve had a lot of change from last season with new players coming in so it’s a lot to get used too. We had good spells during the game but unfortunately they weren’t enough to come away with a result. The good thing is that we can now build on this and adapt for our upcoming game against Ascot, which is also going to be a tough one. It’s only early in the season and we have a long road ahead.

Maidenhead United compete in Division One South West of the Women’s National League.

Sunday was a good performance to get us well-needed points for the league table. It was great to have our first league performance under the new manager Ryan Taylor who has brought in a number of new ideas for our team. The other great additions were Kirsty and Gemma who both made their first appearances for us and both added great value to the squad. I felt it was a solid team performance but next week will really test us when we play in the cup against Bridgwater.
