Former AFC Aldermaston and current Sandhurst Town full back Richard Jones has announced his retirement following complications with a long-standing knee injury.
‘Dickie’ first came to our attention playing for the Atom Men during their first season back in the Hellenic League Division One East in 2016/17.
He featured 18 times that season either side of a brief spell with Ascot United and has since featured for Sandhurst, Tadley Calleva and Wallingford Town, returning initially in December 2018 after a long injury lay off.
Posting on twitter, Jones said: “Following complications with my knee after Saturday’s game, it’s with a heavy heart that I’m forced to announce my retirement.
“I’m pleased to have finished on a high and my dad got to watch my final game. I’m sure I’ll return in some capacity once the road ahead is clearer.”
Jones’ final game was for Sandhurst on Saturday, a 4-1 win over FC Deportivo Galicia at Bottom Meadow.
The Fizzers tweeted: “Honoured that your last game was for us Dickie and you were fantastic! We all wish you the best and you’ll be a credit to any club you join in a coaching or voluntary capacity.”
FiB would like to wish Dickie all the best for the future, and we hope to see him back in the non league game in due course.
