How we missed this back in August I don’t know, but Wycombe Wanderers boss and Finchampstead Athletic Sunday player spoke to The League Paper about his enduring love of playing football.
Ainsworth, scorer of this famous goal for QPR against Rushden & Diamonds in 2003..
..is still turning out for Bracknell Sunday Premier League side Finch and absolutely loving it.
He confessed to the League Paper after playing in a pre season friendly: “I played, I didn’t train! We had our first friendly last weekend. We won 2-1 and I even managed a goal.”
The Chairboys boss said he needed to keep fit as he was signed for Wycombe on non-contract basis: “I’m signed on again for Wycombe on non-contract, that’s how tight things are. We’re going to sail close to the wind as we probably won’t fill the bench for a lot of the games, so I need to keep myself fit anyway.”
One of the boys
Ainsworth admitted he enjoyed just being ‘one of the boys’ for Finch and joked that cult Wycombe striker Adebayo Akinfenwa would be pretty handy in the ‘rough and tumble’ world of Sunday football.
Whatever Ainsworth is doing, he is certainly setting a good example for his players – Wycombe sit sixth in Sky Bet EFL League 2 and have won four of their last five games.
Finchampstead have been drawn against Windsor York Club in the Quarter Finals of the Berks & Bucks County Intermediate Sunday Cup.
