Women’s football fans will no doubt be rejoicing at the return of top flight football as the FA WSL and FA Championship opening fixtures were released today after the 2019/20 season was cancelled indefinitely with the arrival of the covid-19 pandemic.
Here at Football in Berkshire, all eyes are on Reading FC Women and their upcoming campaign having finished in fifth place. Anxious fans will have noted the exodus of eight players when contracts ran out at the end of June, however, some solid signings show Reading mean business with more deals yet to come it would seem when Reading tweeted ‘Hear from the six players to have penned deals with Reading FC Women so far this summer…’.
Chelsea were eventually crowned title winners on a points per game system, which saw Reading local, Fran Kirby clinch her third FA WSL title with the squad.
The 2020/21 season will start afresh on the weekend of the 5th of September where Reading will face Arsenal, which will undoubtedly be a very exciting game given the newly signed Danielle Carter and Emma Mitchell will face their former squad as they make their debuts at Meadow Park.
The following weekend will then see the Royals take on newly-promoted Aston Villa at the teased venue of the Madejski Stadium, the official club statement does, however, state ‘the venue is subject to change’. Aston Villa will be out to prove themselves against Reading having won the championship with 13 victories in 14 games.
Reading will certainly be one to watch for the upcoming season.
The Royals Women’s opening FA WSL fixtures are:
Sunday 6th September: Arsenal vs Reading
