A group of young Berkshire footballers met their hero this week as one of the county’s finest footballers took time out to join in a training session.

Youngsters at Wargrave Women & Girls FC met England Lioness and Chelsea superstar Fran Kirby, with the girl’s smiles enough to warm even the coldest heart on a freezing midweek night.

Kirby was invited by the club to come along to a training session to give a talk about a new academy she is opening up in Sonning, to answer some questions and of course, pose for a few photos.

Woodley United Ladies defender and goalkeeper Nicole Haines tweeted her daughter had said ‘mum I could cry’, at the news Kirby would be at training.

Of course, famous faces are nothing new to the Wargrave youngsters with none other than former British Prime Minister Theresa May a regular visitor as the club’s President.

Kirby herself is a regular visitor ‘home’, spotted from time to time at games across the county. In 2019 she posed in support of our #CMONDUDS campaign to support this sites late co-founder Darrell Freeland in his health battle.

We look forward to seeing Fran back on the pitch for England soon. In the meantime your next chance to catch Lionesses in Berkshire like Mary Earps, Alessia Russo and Ella Toone is on Sunday when Manchester United visit the Select Car Leasing Stadium for what we understand should be a record home crowd for Reading FC Women. All the weekend fixtures are here.
