One October evening in 2022, I arrived at my first football training session. England had just won the EUROs, and like so many women and girls – I felt inspired.
However, at 34, I assumed my playing days were behind me. An avid football fan all my life, I’d never played.
But post-pandemic I decided to grab life by the footballs, and have a go. I was nervous, sure I wouldn’t be good or fit enough – I needn’t have been.
Over the next 6 months – our group of 6 women turned into a 22-strong squad. And like the perfect seasoning; it’s our blend of different ages, life and playing experiences – that make Wokingham & Emmbrook Ladies special.
I’d have never have considered joining a team in my twenties, plagued by insecurities and concern for social pressure. But in my thirties, it’s easier to let go, worry less and enjoy every minute.
The football is great, I’m fitter, I’m even a little better – but what I really love is the people. To be a part of a group of women who support you, on and off the pitch. To know if you’re having a bad day, training and game days are sure to pick you up.
These 22 women aren’t just my friends, they’re my sisters.
