We caught up with Maidenhead United captain, Sarah Thompson ahead of their Berks & Bucks Senior Cup final tie. The game is fourth county cup in ten years with Magpies never having clinched the title before and we asked Sarah if as a captain and the within the wider if they set the competition within their ambitions at the beginning of the season,
“we’ve always had our sights set on another piece of silverware this season. Winning the cup last year was a great highlight for us and we’d like to try and replicate that tomorrow.”
Maidenhead now sit at the top of the tree as the highest ranked club in the county, competing in Division One South West of the Women’s National League, and we asked Sarah if that feed into the matchday motivation to win.
“We were well aware going into the competition that we should be the favourites but ultimately, as with any cup competition, it all comes down to who will perform on the day and we know we’ll need to work hard to earn the win.”
The Magpies attained the Combined Counties League Cup in a feisty tie with Fulham in the 2023/24 season and we asked if that victory brings any pressure to this year’s silverware opportunity, “I wouldn’t say there’s any pressure in the final. Everyone wants to win, we know that. But Ed asks us to play in a way where we enjoy ourselves and enjoy the occasion. If we do that, work hard, and play our game, then the rest will come.”
Maidenhead will face off against Newport Pagnell Town at 2pm on Sunday 16th of March at Holloways Park, the home of Beaconsfield Town.
