Binfield FC and why the league table might lie

Anyone with a passing interest in Hellenic League football will be familiar with the name of Binfield FC.

In the past six or seven years they have been a regular in the top six spaces of the Hellenic League Premier Division – in nine seasons in the league they have never finished outside the top eight.

However, it’s been a different story this season with the club currently down in fifteenth position. Despite this lower than expected league position there are reasons for optimism. The club has only played 13 games this season, a division low.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town (who currently sit in 4th place) have played 22 of their 38 league games. In fact, if Binfield won all of their nine games in hand over Wotton Bassett the Berkshire club would be thirteen points above Bassett.

Despite Binfield’s current 15th position they are actually 8th in the points per game table. Clearly if Binfield want to finish the season in a higher position they do have to win the games they have in hand. However, their current position probably doesn’t reflect their season so far.

The club will clearly want to catch up on the other clubs in the league table as soon as possible. However, their next game this Saturday is against 2nd placed Brimscome & Thrupp in the Bluefin Sports Hellenic League Challenge Cup!
