We might be a teensy bit biased, and we’ve certainly not been to every ground in the country even if you add all the Football in Berkshire team together.
But, we’re absolutely saying, if you are into your signs, then Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League side Wokingham & Emmbrook have one of the best, and probably strangest.
The clubssss Lowther Road ground hasssss a little bit of a problem you sssssee.
Snakes.
That’s right. What Wikipedia describes as ‘elongated, limbless, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes’.
So Sandhurst Town might have its late summer mosquitos and Windsor it’s Great Park Stags, but snakes top the charts for us.
As Wokingham’s media officer Andrew Batt explains: “There were some grass snakes in that area of the Lowther Road ground and the club opted to keep the area unmowed and placed the sign accordingly.
“Just to be clear, it’s grass snakes, nothing more than that!”
Who are Wokingham & Emmbrook?
Wokingham & Emmbrook formed from a merger of the famous old Wokingham Town side and Emmbrook Sports, then a Reading Senior League Step 7 side.
Wokingham Town had a big history in non-league football and particularly in Berkshire where they were one of the county’s bigger sides (with a decent FA Trophy record), almost reaching the top tier of non-league football during the 1980s.
However, a nomadic existence followed the club’s departure from its Finchampstead Road ground in 1999 that took in stays across clubs in four counties during a period that included a merger with Emmbrook Sports in 2004 – the eventual plan being to move to Emmbrook’s Lowther Road – a cricket facility during the summer months.
Planning for that took a lot longer than anticipated, however, planning permission for work to bring the ground up to Step 6 standard was eventually granted in time for the 2019/20 season.
