Pitching In Southern League Basingstoke Town have issued a cheeky plea to Hollywood superstar Hugh Jackman in the wake of the Wrexham takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

As most of you will be aware, Deadpool star Reynolds and McElhenney of ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ fame have taken control of the Vanarama National League side in North Wales this week and announced the news in what I can confirm is a typically humorous fashion with an ad for the clubs main sponsor, Ifor Williams Trailers.

So why are the ‘stoke wooing Jackman?

Having spent the last few good years working for the parent company of the Mirror, I’m all over this and immediately got the joke.

Since 2008, Reynolds and the Greatest Showman star have been involved in a ‘feud’ – note the single apostrophes, they’re important.

They met on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine just after Reynolds had married Jackman’s close friend, Scarlett Johansson and have been enjoying their online feud ever since.

According to the Evening Standard, Jackman said: “I used to ream him because I was very close friends with Scarlett [Johansson], and Scarlett had just married Ryan, so when he came on set I was like, Hey, you better be on your best behaviour here, pal, because I’m watching.”

“We started ribbing each other that way, and then it all escalated with the Deadpool thing and him calling me out, and trying to manipulate me through social media to do what he wanted.”

Since then, the pair have used their made up antagonism to promote good causes as well as each others films. Imagine what a cross border rivalry might do for Basingstoke Town if Jackman did get involved?
