During the 2018/19 season, Reading FC Women – led by England legend Fara Williams – became the only Berkshire side to reach the semi-finals of the Women’s FA Cup when they beat a Manchester United side that included Alex Greenwood 3-2 after extra-time to set up a last four meeting with West Ham United. The Hammers went on to win 4-3. The Manchester win was selected by the FA as one of the greatest Quarter Final games in the competitions history.
In 1970, the first Women’s FA Cup took place and included Berkshire representation. Then known as the Mitre Challenge Trophy, the Bracknell Bullets were one of 71 sides to enter, and they were in regional Group 5 alongside two sides from Amersham, another from Luton and nine other teams. Details of progress are frustratingly thin on the ground but goalkeeper Terri Hinton (nee Irvine) went on to play for England.
