AFC Portchester could give FA Cup reprieve to Tadley Calleva

Despite a heavy 8-1 FA Cup defeat, Tadley Calleva could have a way back into the competition thanks to opponents AFC Portchester.

This is because the Portsmouth based side allegedly played an ineligible in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie against Wells City.

At the weekend, Portchester’s FA Cup First Qualifying Round tie with Didcot Town was postponed.

An FA Spokesperson said: “AFC Portchester have been charged with allegedly playing an ineligible player in their Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie against Wells City on Saturday 5 August. We are unable to comment further while the process is ongoing, but an update will be provided in due course.”

In their run to the First Qualifying Round, Portchester beat Wells 2-1 away and Tadley 8-1 away.

Should the case be proven and the allegation against AFC Portchester upheld, it is unclear whether Wells or Tadley would benefit, or whether Didcot simply receive a bye to the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round where they would host Bristol Manor Farm.

Any outcome will need to come quickly with the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round matches due to take place on the weekend of Saturday 16th September 2023. A full list of FA Cup round dates for 2023/24 is here.
