Wokingham & Emmbrook’s Sam Mead is up for a Berkshire Football Award in the category of Young Player of the Season (Male) sponsored by Taurus Carpentry Ltd.
One nomination for the award said: “Sam joined the Sumas in November with the Sumas cast adrift at the bottom of the league with only 1 league win in 17 games. The 18-year-old midfielder soon made his mark scoring in wins against Spelthorne, Holyport and Windsor in his first 6 games. He was made vice-captain and subsequently captained the team numerous times in the run-in. His goals helped fire the Sumas well clear from relegation and ended the season on 9 goals in 22 games making him joint top scorer for the season at the club. Having only turned 18 just before signing for W&E this is an incredible achievement for one so young. Sam started the season at Sandhurst playing in all of their first 9 games where Sandhurst’s title challenge was laid down with 9 wins and 47 goals scored. He scored 3 goals on that period as a 17-year-old before moving to step 5. A fantastic candidate for this award for scoring vital goals at the wrong end of the table!”
Another added: “He scored vital goals in our relegation battle, 9 goals in 22 games as an 18 year old CM. Took massive penalties in big risk games.”
