Ascot United have bolstered their goalkeeping options in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division North with the addition of a former pro ‘stopper.
Jamie Ashdown began his career with Reading and went on to play for the likes of AFC Bournemouth, Oxford United and Portsmouth where he won an FA Cup winners medal with the South Coast side.
The ‘keeper played 13 senior games for Reading, taking the number one shirt from American Marcus Hahnemann following an injury – keeping hold of the shirt until his departure to Pompey at the end of the season.
Ashdown will compete with the Yellamen’s established number one Sam Gray who has re-signed with the club and will undoubtedly continue coaching the side’s young goalkeepers.
A statement by the club said: “We’re delighted to announce that former Premier League and FA Cup winner, Jamie Ashdown has come out of retirement and committed to the club for the season.”
