Reading FC have recalled goalkeeper James Holden from his loan with Vanarama National League Maidenhead United.
Holden had been on loan at the Magpies since the summer having previously spent an emergency loan spell with the club at the end of the 2020/21 season where he kept a clean sheet in the draw with Yeovil Town.
The goalkeeper began the season as the York Road number one, the Magpies winning their opening two fixtures but was sent off in the sixth game of the season at home to Stockport County and wasn’t seen again until the 4-0 defeat by Boreham Wood 10 matches later.
More recently, Hungarian goalkeeper Dániel Gyollai – on loan himself from Peterborough United – has been the preferred glovesman between the sticks with Holden’s last appearance coming in the 4-0 defeat by Solihull Moors in mid-December.
The recall though won’t necessarily have anything to do with game time for the goalkeeper who has also had a spell with Bracknell Town. As Berkshire Live reports, Reading’s Brazilian goalkeeper Rafael is expected to leave in the transfer window and this has led to both Holden and Jokull Andresson (on loan at League One Morecambe) being recalled as cover for current Royals number one Luke Southwood.
Maidenhead recently saw Holden’s rival for the number one shirt, Rhys Lovett move on to Billericay Town.
