Maidenhead United relegated on final day of Vanarama National League season

Maidenhead United’s eight-year stay in the top-tier of English Non-League Football came to an end on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Magpies faced Boston United at York Road needing a win to stay up (they won 3-0) while they also needed Solihull Moors to beat Dagenham & Redbridge and Wealdstone to lose or draw at home to FC Halifax Town.

Shawn McCoulsky put the Magpies ahead on 33 minutes, converting from Reece Smith’s cross, but by that time Wealdstone were already 3-0 up at home.

Relegation also means boss Alan Devonshire’s record of never having been relegated as a manager over a career that spans Brentford Women, Braintree Town and Hampton & Richmond Borough, is also over.

Heartbreak as well for Dagenham & Redbridge despite a 1-1 draw with Solihull Moors. Wealdstone though stay up by virtue of a 3-1 win over FC Halifax Town.

Heading down then, Dagenham & Redbridge, Maidenhead United, AFC Fylde and Ebbsfleet United, which should at least mean one high-profile Berkshire derby next season with the Magpies lining up alongside Slough Town.
